Personal equipment used in business: management like?
Many businesses allow employees to use personal mobile devices in their daily work but lack of management policies.
A survey of 988 IT managers published this week by the vendor Courion showed that 69% of organizations allow employees to use personal mobile devices to connect to corporate networks. The remarkable thing is, 1 / 4 of business or is no policy applies to personal mobile devices to access the application or not should be aware of such policies.
According to Andrew Borg, an analyst at Aberdeen Group, the devices under the ownership of employees must also comply with the policy. Minimum include the ability to erase and lock device of a particular employee.
Even if it should be possible to apply the stricter control measures, such as data encryption on the device and use a virtual private network (VPN) mobile. To resolve the situation and equipment are common confusion for both personal data and enterprise, not a lack of commercial products have good technology, can create separate use for personal and business purposes career at the operating system for smartphones and tablet PCs. Possibilities include mobile desktop virtualization VMware, Borg said.
Recent research by Aberdeen Group, published last month 3 / 2011, on mobile devices owned by individual staff are being used for work, show that in a survey of 500 enterprises, 72 % "allows the use of mobile devices owned by individual employees for work purposes." This percentage increased significantly from 40% allowed just two years ago. In survey 3 / 2011, 45% accept any kind of device of the staff, and 27% said the devices must conform to the policy.
When it comes to allowing employees to purchase any mobile devices they want to use in the workplace, "there are many smart plan, but also how unwise," Borg said. Some businesses accept them simply because they say so would push the cost of purchasing equipment for the staff, while the IT department no effort to manage and protect them. But this view is "shortsighted," Borg said. Strategic perspective as to how to achieve compliance by the personal mobile device with security policies and manage the business.
Some organizations may agree.
Endre Walls, chief technology officer of human resource development organization, is headquartered in Philadelphia, a nonprofit organization with about 4,800 employees in 14 states, providing social welfare services, said "Our policy allows employees to use personal equipment for the job if they want." However, organizations only accept personal devices such as iPhone and Android, for work if the employee agrees to use some software managing mobile devices. Organizations that use mobile services based on cloud MaaS360 Fiberlink, force users to login and password authentication, and allows IT departments to wipe data on the device if lost or beaten theft.
Previously, the organization has 300 BlackBerry shop, but that number has dropped since people often choose to use personal mobile devices of their own.
But not all analysts have the same views on the use of personal equipment for the job.
Analyst Ken Dulaney of Gartner, speaking at the Summit on the Information Security at Gartner recently admitted mobile technology is now challenging some traditional concepts of best practice when labor "fascinated" iPhone, Android and other newer devices, they do not want to leave them and use them as tools of their work. "This is about fashion, not a computer problem. IT has lost control," Dulaney said.
Emerging generation of new labor force is "the population", and for their desk phone has a past, Dulaney said.Referring to the smartphone user preferences and tablets, he recommended, if the employee owns them, the devices in some cases should be treated differently if the enterprise level.
The equipment owned by the employee can not achieve the performance on such equipment owned by the company, perhaps the only exception is email. It should be "policy to individual responsibility," Dulaney said. "They must report the loss of equipment and acceptance for IT departments to wipe the content for any reason." He said that means the employee to back up "their personal stuff."
Also, "they still require a desktop or laptop," citing the need to work with things like spreadsheets not convert perfectly into the existing mobile devices .
However, if employees choose to use a mobile device by the enterprise level, IT departments will take full responsibility in the purchase and maintenance of equipment, Dulaney said. Furthermore, an enterprise, the senior executives and salespeople who often get what they want. Therefore, the department may need to apply a service "VIP" to restrict network access for specific groups.
However, other analysts, Craig Mathias of Farpoint Group, based in Ashland, Massachusetts, said that "Work out so many different policies a disaster work."
"Do not be silly," Mathias advises. If employees are allowed to bring mobile devices to their personal and use them on a corporate network managers to install software of mobile devices and IT departments should emphasize the role of his right control equipment.
According to Mathias, these companies have no policies to manage their own mobile devices employees use at work will not be able to monitor the information value of the company's strategy on that particular device.
